First cost-sharing agreement & Pfizer contract signed!

At our Q3 update, we’re incredibly excited to announce two massive milestones.

First cost-sharing agreement with Sokoto state signed

We’re thrilled to announce a landmark achievement: Lafiya has signed its first cost-sharing Memorandum of Understanding with the Sokoto State government. Despite shrinking health budgets worldwide following the USAID shutdown, Sokoto is stepping up with 100 million Naira (~$66,000) commitment in 2026 to procure family planning commodities. This is a powerful vote of confidence in both the programme and the impact of Lafiya’s community-based distribution model.

This MoU establishes a dedicated budget line for family planning commodities in Sokoto and begins as a 1:1 matching arrangement, with state funding increasing over time and philanthropic contributions decreasing. It means that we are now not only partners in delivering services but also in financing sustainable, locally owned solutions for reproductive health.

New Pfizer partnership

We have confirmed our official partnership agreement with Pfizer This means we are now the only implementing organisation to bring Sayana Press (the self-injectable contraceptive we distribute) directly into Nigeria. This partnership will steeply increase the number of self-injectables available in Nigeria. The first order of 400,000 doses (!) is placed and on the way to Kano state, Nigeria. We are thrilled as this collaboration will open new pathways to growth.

We have reached the whopping number of 333,000 women with access to family planning services. Our reach keeps growing month over month. Our entire team feels humbled by the immense support we’ve received in the past year to get to this milestone. Almost half of these women (47 percent) are first-time users, showing that our community-based approach is reaching those who have never had access before.

Exciting addition to Lafiya’s leadership team

We are delighted to announce that Miranda Buba Atare has joined Lafiya’s leadership team as Director of Programmes and Advocacy just before the summer. In recent months, Miranda has already played a pivotal role in achieving key strategic milestones for Lafiya, including the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Sokoto state government. With over 20 years of experience in the Nigerian public sector, including more than 10 years in public health supply chains at JSI, Miranda is a proven leader in scaling impactful initiatives and engaging with the Nigerian government. We are so happy that Miranda is strengthening our team!
